Varanasi Nagar Nigam previously operated with 90 wards. Following the boundary expansion and delimitation exercise approved by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2022, the city now has 100 wards — first used in the May 2023 municipal election and still in force today. Ward boundaries and names are notified by the state government and reviewed periodically.
